Monastir with its golden beaches and sapphire blue sea, its medieval monuments and its charming marina, offers one of the most attractive faces of Tunisia. Built in 1963, his faithful architecture to inherited traditions, beautiful decorations of extreme delicacy in the background a very fine specimen of architecture and traditional art. Mausoleum of Bourguiba
In the center of the large cemetery immediately adjacent to the Ribat is the enormous mausoleum of the much-loved former ‘President for Life’, Habib Bourguiba.
The colorful cupolas and marble minarets of this mausoleum, final resting place of Monastir-born Habib Bourguiba, the first president of independent Tunisia, are certainly eye-catching, and the octagonal marble hall containing his sarcophagus is impressive, too. Next to the hall are tombs of the family and a small display of his personal items.
This fortress is located next to the sea and founded in 796.
A spiral stair of about a hundred steps leads to the watchtower form the top of which visual messages were exchanged at night with the towers of neighboring Ribats and from which visitors can admire a superb view over the city and the open sea.
It has been used in several films as a stand in for Jerusalem, most notably «Monty Python’s Life of Brian».
It was the residence of Hassan Essaka «CAID», Ottoman Governor of Monastir (1920 – 1933) construite en 1932.
